I have a 1987 Chevrolet C20 truck that has a 305 engine; different than the engine it came out with. All the parts that I have replaced were bought for a 305 engine, except the rear brakes, which were bought for a 300 V6. So when the starter needed to be replaced, it has been replaced about 10 times now and still isn't right. The only thing that hasn't been done, is a top-of-the line starter bought or one bought from Chevrolet. The last starter that was put on was bought from Advance Auto Parts. It lasted about 10 cranks and the teeth were eaten off of this starter. None of the starters that have been replaced lasted long. The longest lasting and best sounding starter that was replaced, was a starter that was new, with a lifetime warranty. It lasted about 30 cranks. The flywheel was replaced..... but nothing was wrong with the old one. Shimming the starters made them worse. The starter that was on the truck originally wasn't shimmed. Never had a problem for over a year after the truck was bought. Then, one day it started spinning, scraping, etc. and nothing has fixed it. Could something be out of line? I don't know what could be wrong. Please, please help!

This engine design is old as dirt and shims if needed have to be just right. There's obviously a fight going on there unless block itself is bent somehow?? Here's how shims are supposed to set gap for the teeth, T
