Unusual Brake Problem
|
|
|
Hi All, I have an ’82 Chevy c10 pickup with a 6.2 L Diesel with probably 300+ kmiles on it. It has a power brake booster driven by the power steering pump. My wife was driving it the other day and said that when she applied the brakes they felt soft, almost as if there were air in the lines. She also noticed that when this happened the red “Brake light” on the instrument panel “flashed on” momentarily. Once she pumped the brakes they felt fine. She said this happened twice, both times after driving on the freeway for about 15 minutes without using the brakes. When the brakes were used over short time intervals they felt normal. I did a quick check and the fluid levels were tiptop and there is no leakage of any fluids anywhere. Any ideas on what might be going on? Thanks

I doubt it has anything to do with the booster system. You may have a master cylinder or ABS unit bypassing. It needs to be checked out by a professional. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I think in this case you will have to check your brake booster because when booster goes bad you will have low brake padal issues, check the same if it is bad then you will have to replace the boost unit.

I'd disagree with that. The hydroboost provides the same assist as a vacuum boost, and a failure would cause a hard pedal not a soft one. This truck was losing pressure and had to be pumped up a bit to achieve braking force. Not a booster issue. I would look closer inside your drums though to be sure you aren't leaking out of a wheel cylinder. Might not see it just yet through the backing plate if it just started. If they are good, I would be looking at the master as the culprit.

Nick is right. It's a loss of hydraulic pressure not booster.

This sounds like the master cylinder as it can correct with pumping brakes. Not expensive from what I found out there but if you want to just do it make sure your bleeders are in good shape and put some PB on them now! Could it be something else - yes of course. They can pull that and be full of fluid without leaks but check for those anywhere brake fluid travels, T

Could be the brake pads are being pushed back from the rotors whick would cause a situation like what you describe. I'm pretty sure there is a one way check valve in the brake system on disc brake cars to keep the pads out to the rotor. Just a thought.

????? Say what? Yes if you pushed them back on purpose but they don't go back in too far by themselves. Thread started over a month ago and would hope the problem has been solved by now, T
