fuel gauge and service engine light Sign In

2002 chevy s10 4x4 4 door 4.3L 175000 miles test drove a 2002 chevy s10 4x4 4door that i am interested in buying. owner told me he had new fuel pump installed and after awhile the gas gauge quit working and the service engine light came on . he took truck to advance auto parts to have the code checked he was told the fuel tank ground showed up and hence the service engine light comming on. the truck has 175000 miles on it (4.3L V6) but looks and runns great with alot of new parts he has had installed. i can do simple repairs but this code thing is beyond my abbilities, my question is , is it a loose wire that may have popped off or is there more serious problem and can you advise me to a sollution thank you sgb

Re: fuel gauge and service engine light Sign In

Its most likely a simple fix, but you need to test it properly to find it. If you get the truck and decide you want to attempt the repair we can walk you through it if we get the exact code number. The connectors on these were prone to problems, especially when they get handled. The better grades of pumps actually come with the new pigtail that you replace the old connector with to keep this from happening. Most likely the issue will be simple and right at the fuel pump connector that was disturbed when replacement of the pump occurred. Your choice to buy it, but if the rest of it is sound and to your liking don't let such a minor thing stop you from buying it. We are here if you need advice to figure this problem or others out.

Those guys never cease to amaze me at how stupid some of their advice is. There is not code that would tell you something that specific. My guess is the fuel pump is defective but that is yet to be determined. Not surprising with some of the junk being sold now.

Re: fuel gauge and service engine light Sign In

thank you hammer so i would have to get it tested to make sure something else is not bad , if that will not detect that specific problem . I live in Ky and there is a 6% grade on the road i test drove on and the truck took it very well doing about 60 mph . didnt want to slow down at all.

Do you know what the code number was? A fuel level sender code (P0461, P0462, or P0463) is a type C DTC, which won't illuminate the check engine light.

Re: fuel gauge and service engine light Sign In

hi guys. bought the truck today and took it in to have codes read there are 3 detected p0442-p0446-and p0453 having something to do with vacuum fuel recerculation said that there is possible hose leak and that may cause the fuel gauge to not read. other than that it is fine

Re: fuel gauge and service engine light Sign In

Those codes all have to do with the EVAP system and related valves and sensors in the tank area. You could have a damaged harness in the tank area.

Re: fuel gauge and service engine light Sign In

I have no idea. We don't even know what the problem is yet. You may have to drop the tank for inspection but I don't know at this point.
