knock in transmission, please help
|
|

Hello every, second post on here and got some really great responses the first time 1998 Chevorlet K1500 (cheyenne) 5.0 232k miles 4WD, extended cab 2 door short bed 5 sp transmision Right now i am in the process of finding a piece of technology that can record video and i will get a video link of the noise and problem up asap, my 600$ camera cant take video...go figure. a few months back my truck died on me, wouldnt start and i ended up putting it into the shop. they told me it was the spider injectors on my fuel injection system got stuck open, replaced them it starts fine now. when i got it back it had a slick "knock" to it. i asumed this is from driving it right before it completly broke down she was driving pretty rough and probally should have turned her off and got it towed but being the "frugal" person i am (poor) i drove it about 4 miles to my mothers house and parked it. the whole time i dorve the truck it had almost no power, had to ride it in 1st and sometimes if i was lucky could get it to go around 25 in 2nd gear. loud backfiring/knocking sound the whole way (yes i know, please dont ridicule me over this i already know it was not a smart move to continue driving the vehicle) back to the "slight knock" i just rambled on about (trying to give details as good as possible) the knock started out only appearing when the RPM reached around 2.8-3k which is usually when i shift and then the knock went away so i just tried to shift before it started. coming home from school yesterday by the time i got home the knock was loaud and constant, even when i let it sit and idle it was loaud and constant. i turned the truck over today to try and hear where it is coming from and it sounds like it is coming from the transmision, right where the oil pan and the tranny come together. as soon as my son gets home ill get his $50 camera that can take video and try and get some good see and hear for you guys up. thanks in advance and if there is anything else i left out please ask.

Sounds like rod knock/spun bearing. You can hear the double knock a few seconds after starting. I don't ever think i've heard of a flywheel breaking and causing that type of noise. A flex plate on an automatic can crack or break and cause knocking. Your probably going to end up pulling the oil pan and checking rod bearings. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Just your normal set of metric sockets and wrenches. The only special thing you'll need besides jack and jack stands is something to lift the front of the engine up so the oil pan clears. The fuel pouring out of the injector assembly may have diluted the engine oil and finished off the bearings. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

on the repair bill there was an oil change on it so im pretty confident the shop changed it out afterwards. wondering if this is something i should be bringing up to the guy that did the work since this was not a issue before i brought the truck into them.

oh and if it is the bearings, what kind of job is it to replace? is it just a matter of removing the 2 bolts that conect the piston to the crankshaft and replacing that bearing? i guess ill do a little research on the bearings to see what im up against. again thanks for your replies. i will follow up when i take some action, may not be right away. may be this weekend....who knows.

I am not sure how they would react to that. That is your choice if you want to go that route or not. There are many reasons for bearings to go bad. Could be wear and tear or some other problem that caused that. You'll know more of what happened when the pan is dropped and bearings inspected. Well, with that kind of noise, if it is a rod bearing, more than just the bearing is damaged. There is probably damage on the crank journal and the rod bore. With the mileage it would probably need to be overhauled. Sometimes it is easier to install a good used engine or reman. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

yeah im thinking i may look for a decent used motor for it with some lower miles, figure im going to dump money into it one way or another may as well just get a new motor. its apretty comon truck and year. you wouldnt by chance know what year chevy/GMC's are all compatable with mine would you? from what i understand they dont make too many standard's in my model not sure if it matters..... i wont be installing the new one anyways will have a mechanic do it probally.

Ok need a bit of advice. I found a guy with a wrecked 94 chevy truck. his truck has a 350 in it (mine is a 305) and it is a automatic (mine is a manual). he is willing to sell me the transfer case, transmisiion and motor for 300 bucks but needs a answer tonight. he said the truck was wrecked and he was just going to have it towed away for junk metal and get about 300 bucks out of the deal for it. anyways my question is. can i put the motor, tranny and transfer case in my truck? and just convert my truck into a automatic?

or would i be better off just taking the 350 motor and getting some kind of kit to change the flywheel so it is usable with a manual transmisssion. i dont mind spending a little money just looking to do this the easiest/cheapest way. otherwise im better off just buying a new truck

They should both be 4L60E transmissions if im not mistaken, but there will be a different PCM, wiring harness's and little odds and ends that wont match up. It would be easier to put a identical 305 engine back into it. Basically if your going to do the swap it would be handy to have the whole truck so you can rob all the little stuff you need.

i can get the whole truck,.......or could going to call the guy tomorow. just got off the phone with a friend and he said same thing. something about if the 350 was a "vortec" (mine is a "vortec" ) then they would match but if not then going to need to be rewired. hopefully this guys still has it because seems like it will be a decent deal. the whole truck is a wreck and he just wants his 300 bucks for slavage i can get as much or as little as i want.

Re: knock in transmission, please help

I highly doubt it will be a simple drop in replacement without some wiring changes, but i am not a chevy guy so I wouldn't know all the details.. there should be tons of tips on the internet if you google it.. if you have a doner truck there is nothing to worry about as long as your comfortable doing it and know what you are doing. I would highly doubt the wiring and PCM would be the same for 2 different engines though.

Well if it's not a vortec then it's not even the same generation of powertrain.. definitely would be a lot of modding to get this to work.. I would stay away if I were you.. I would imagine that you should be able to find a 305 vortec around somewhere they are very common.. used engines range from $400~$800 here depending on mileage in this area and alot less work. In simple terms it will not work easily ... There is lots you have to think about Different fuel system? Exhaust Mounts Possible tranny Clusters PCM Complete wiring (whole truck) and .... who knows if was the same year truck 5.0 to 5.7 and both vortec you might be able to get away with just switching the engine harness and PCM... but this is not the case

You need to stay away from this. These engine are not interchangeable at all. You're trying to substitute and OBD1 with a totally different engine ibto an OBD2 compliant engine. Not only will it be about impossible, it's against federal law also. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That is true too never even though about federal law.. Canada you are allowed as long as it's re-registered as hot rod and meets 1988 tail pipe emission standards ... again alot more work! again i am almost %100 positive you can find a 5.0L for around $500

dam that sucks. i really want to get my truck back up and running. from other sources i have heard that they have the same bolt pattern and the only thing i will need to fix is the wire harness. why is it against federal law ? trust me my truck will not be a hotrod.....dam really? i thought this was a gppd purchase. dissapointed now, had nothing better to do this summer than fix my truck, im not looking for a hot rod......

by the way i just want to say thanks guys, if not for you i probally would have bought this truck and if it is useless to me then it would have been a huge waste of time and money. if this truck can get my truck going. i really need to know. i have all summer and "some" funds to make this project happen. trucks of my category are going for 2.5k in the classifieds i hold allot of respect for you guys opinions and i feel this site is better than any other for advice on this subject. I have been told by a couple people(forums, trust me i know how much garbage is on the net) that this is a good purchase i dont care if the dude junks it...if i cant use it..help me out :)

Re: knock in transmission, please help

Again answer is no it's not feasible to transfer the power plants over.. I would recommend buying a truck the same vintage for doner or finding a replacement engine. You will be in way over your head.. Good purchase or not there is alot more work then you or they realize and at the end of the day it's technically illegal. If you are in no hurry then the ball is in your court take your time and find a suitable doner or proper replacement engine.. FYI in ontario, canada hotrod is considered any powertrain installed in a vehicle that it was not designed for and used for pleasure only. $10 free to switch registration and $35 to smog test and must pass 1988 tail pipe emission standards. Far as Federal laws go I do not know. I wish you the best of luck, hope your project goes well.

Re: knock in transmission, please help

The 98 is an "Emission Certified" vehicle mean you cannot legally modify the original configuration in any way. There is no option for calling it a "hot rod" to get out of it. Once it's certified, it's always certified. I'm not going into a bunch of detail explaining all the reasons they are different but the first big issue is the 98 uses a Crank sensor and the 94 does not. The fuel systems, including the fuel pump and tank are different along with all the engine management wiring and computer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

update: I found a guy willing to deliver a 305 engine with 150k miles on it for 350 bucks, came out of a 98 chevy as well and has the vortec engine now to decide wether im going to brave the removal and instalation myself or shell out another 500 for a mechanic.
