I have a 1992 Ford F150 with the 5.0 302 motor in it, 2 wheel drive automatic.
I have a loud annoying squeal noise coming from the front of my motor. I have changed the water pump, smog pump, tensioner, alternator, and the belt and the loud annoying squeal returned within like 20 miles. I changed the belt again and installed a very expensive belt. It hasn't squealed for about 4 days and now has just started again, but not nearly as loud and now only does it mainly when the rpms run higher. then goes away when it shifts into over drive or when im sitting still. Please can anyone help with this problem it is driving me crazy. Will the harmonic balancer do this???? I am hoping it's nothing major. I took it to a mechanic and he keeps saying it the belt, but i just dont believe that because when a new belt is installed its fine for a short bit then returns.

Expensive belt or not it still could be? Does the tensioner have enough range for this belt? If you can spin alternator by hand easily by fins with it in place it's not tight enough, tensioner is maxed out, or belt has an attitude which some do.

In that it can go away I doubt for now that this is a bearing issue,

So keep the belt in place and then try to turn the fins on the alternator correct?
Thank you,Wes

Yes - it's just a trick I have used for ions as to how good the grip is of a belt. This alternator should have fins you can grab fairly well, some are not practical. Also check longest stretch between pulleys for how much deflection it has - shouldn't be too much. Arggh - about 1/2 inch or so with a one finger push - hard to know exactly without some tools.

Look at the adjuster and or take belt off noting where it was with the belt and see if it can travel much further then when installed. Index it if not already and look for where it would stop on it's own.

The alternator and PS are culprits for belt squealing with the various loads they impose. Right after start up the alternator suddenly works hard to just put back to battery what was lost to starting is a first clue of a loose belt sometimes.

You said it lasted a few days with a new one. With that know that the original rubber would quickly change from semi rough to about where it will be in about that time so I'm leaning toward the belt being the cause OR defective new tensioner if in range just doesn't have the force needed.??

Don't use belt dressings! That will cause non squealing noise later and not the fix with new parts.

Note on alternator: It works harder than folks realize! Of course it spins free with belt off at that speed but when headlights, fans, defrosters and having just lost some juice in battery are all badgering it, it's working hard especially susceptible at those times to squeal,

The alternator fins will move when i turn it forward or backwards. It does take a little force to get it to turn but it does.

My wife is going to pick up a stethoscope at auto zone for me on her way home from work. I have never used one, but am going to give it a shot. It only cost $9.99

OK: See how that turns out. It's hard to quantify how much strength you applied but many alts wont turn with new belt and tensioner.

Squeals are more common to slippage than a bad bearing but the stethoscope is a good thing to have and could surface the problem.

Let me/us know how it goes,

Re: 1992 F150 Loud squealing noise Sign In

I will. I spoke to the mechanic that keeps telling me its the belt, which this Dayco belt he put on has started squealing. He said he meant to install a Gates belt. He said that the Gates belt will solve all of my problems. Is it possible that an even more expensive belt will solve my problem after i have put 2 cheap belts and currently a top of the line Dayco belt that cost around $34.00 will solve my problem? I swear it sounds like its slipping somewhere?
Thanks,
Wes

Both Dayco Top Cog and GoodYear GatorBack are sold as quiet belts and brag about it. Here's a sample package of the GoodYear belt - ~$50 but you should get credited for one that's noisy!

I can't say for sure with your truck because I can't see it, but I've had vehicles with newer belts that were cheap do this. I've used Gates belts ever since without fail. I put them on my own vehicles too. Never a problem. Its worth the extra money to save your sanity from listening to that belt squeal.
