Hi all,
my 1998 chevy truck just lost power and started chattering

I had driven about 70 miles today with cruise set at 65. Power suddenly dropped up a very slight incline speed dropped to 35-40. Turned radio off and I could hear a clatter. Got off the road and stopped.

got a car hauler ride back home. Started the truck back up with a friend so we could both listen. Oil pressure right up to 50, oil full - truck sounded fine - however it began to rattle slightly at about 30 seconds run time and started getting louder. Turned the truck back off before any noise sounded excessive - not sure if on the top end or bottom.
 Thanks in advance,
Dave

What was the oil pressure when the chattering was going on? Can you record the noise and upload it into a video hosting site and paste the link in here?

Any chance you could get a video of the noise and post it on youtube? You could put the link to the thread so we could hear it a bit better. Your engine is likely failing, but just to be sure its not a coincidental noise take the serpentine belt off, start it and see if the noise is there. If so drop the oil and look for metal flakes in it.

Re: Chevy 1998 1500 Sign In

Houston - We have a problem!! I pulled my oil filter and screened it thru wife's stocking. Stethascoped the block and valve covers while running first and could only hear a little rocker arm slight tap. Thought I might get lucky - but no. Got louder and the 40 pound oil p at idle dropped to 5 or so, musta plugged the intake screen picking up filings while running huh? and dropping off while the truck sat and cooled. - anyway tons of flakes in oil and out of filter and in paper folds. Oil looks a little emulsified so that bothers me a lot. I had the head gasket replaced 12-15K ago, but maybe it went again. I believe that the guy who put it in did it correctly. I happened to be by the shop at some key points while he was doing it and he explained well what had happened, why and the process to repair. I was there just before he dropped the head back on too.

How much would you guess the repairs might cost me for this job? If it is coolant in the oil I assume pretty much that I should get a rebuilt or one from a junked truck to drop in.??

Bottom end bearing job wouldn't take care of everything that has probably been damaged would it?

Thanks for your input. Dave

I'm a little confused here. What is it that you have in the oil pan?

Is it coolant or some kind of hard particles in there? They are quite different scenerios.

Re: Chevy 1998 1500 Sign In

IDK but watching this. From top post this engine lost ability to go up a slight incline more than~ 40 MPH and was making noises. Now you say you've seen just 5PSI oil pressure and still noise and junk noted in oil filter and oil?

I'm not there but I think this engine probably cannibalized itself with friction from lack of oil pressure. For now my suggestion is don't waste too much $$ on this engine as it sounds like it's done with which who knows but may have started back with head gaskets getting coolant in oil maybe?

That can eat up engine bearings and if not such a tough engine (4.3,5.0 or 5.7) would have croaked long ago,

Yes - I think it is toast. Truck only blue books 5K or so on the high end - I guess I should say booked !!
I believe I spun a bearing and that is what I found filtering the oil from the filter. If it is as I guess because of a head gasket failure(my coolant was a couple quarts low when I checked it before I hit the road. I hadn't checked it I don't think since I changed the oil a 1000 miles or so ago. It showed no indication of being low - temp was fine and always held the same quantiy coolant without leaking. I am guessing that there probably is going to be more problem than just one spun bearing if the cause was coolant pin hole leaking in. 5.7 is a tough motor but I think this one probably needsa a complete overhaul and not just the bottom end.

Others won't agree but I'd think about used, low mile and well checked out if you need a new engine. That all depends on the quality of the people checking out them from the junkyards. Here you can get whole engines with a full history.

The design of this engine dates back forever and well proven itself as tough over the decades. Weak on intake gaskets more than much else in my experience.

You probably didn't spin a bearing but who knows anything for sure. That is usually right away with a rebuild job at first start up causing use of words and gestures that defy description.

Good luck with it but I think it's toast from the read,

Re: Chevy 1998 1500 Sign In

Yup - I agree. Now if I could just find a sweet deal on a complete engine nearby I might be set. I have a fella looking - I haven't had time to do much myself as far as looking - but I am hopeful. You have any ideas or leads on a good one pulled from a wreck maybe??

I dunno - but there was alot of metal in the oil I drained from the oil filter and the folds in the paper were pretty gritty with filings too. Non-magnetic material - so I am guessing bronze/brass maybe?

Re: Chevy 1998 1500 Sign In

When you are convinced your engine is toast and if you decide used be sure to get an exact replacement whole. There's risk is either used or rebuilt and new stuff probably not cost effective for the age of it.

Can't speak for the other places out there but two near me will pick from a running vehicle totaled by collision or something like that, that didn't involve the engine. The will take the miles VIN off donor, compression test it and a sheet printed out on the miles the vehicle had then if thought good crate it on a palate and you can go look at it.

Done with biz but used to go check out the crated engine, look for leaks and visuals all over. Pull a valve cover if necessary to check the sludge condition. Then and hopefully the donor vehicle is still there go look at the vehicle and you get a clue from the wreck and sometimes find oil change stickers or better yet some people will keep a log in glove box of what was done when which is a total winner. Then see why that vehicle was sent out for salvage and nice if a side or rear collision vehicle. I frown of front end crashes that are more common.

So far not one has failed after my inspection on top of the salvage yards info. It may be just my two places that are so attentive to this and other places who knows? IMO an original engine will outlast re-maned ones but that depends a lot on the quality of the manufacturer of one.

Prices will vary by vehicle, type of engine, age and your location,

Re: Chevy 1998 1500 Sign In

I've gotten results on car-part.com. Its like google for salvage yards and goes all of north america. This truck probably has an oil cooler, so I would advise very strongly that you either make sure this thing is flushed to the max and then some or buy a new radiator assembly. I have the same style in my 95 Suburban and can get a new one from Oreillys for 180 bucks. All the crap from that motor is in that cooler and waiting to wreck your next one. Doesn't matter if its a reman or used, get that cooler perfect or replaced with new.

Re: Chevy 1998 1500 Sign In

Sounds like you have some good places to look for used stuff. The documentation they do is effiecient and sounds like effective. You are in MA? Probably puts one from back there out of the question to get it to me freight wise. Gives me an idea of what and where to look and see if maybe I can find something with a history.
