2002 Ford F250 locking front hub?

2002 Ford F250 locking front hub? Sign In

I am thinking of buying a 2002 FordF250 4x4 pick up and don't know a whole lot about pick up trucks so I was wondering what exactly is a lock out hub I believe it's called has something to do with the front wheels on the truck,can anyone explain what this is please!

It is a control on each wheel that switches from the wheel being engaged with the differential for 4 wheel drive or unlocked to make each front wheel independent and free rolling as if it was 2WD.

Thank you,one more question if I can,how do I know when wheels are locked into 4 wheel or not locked?

Jack up one wheel and see if it spins without the front driveshaft turning.
If they are manual hubs they should have an engaged/not engaged knob on the hub.

I don't know the Ford ways for the year for 4X4 too well. You may have three way to engage them. Push button, lever on floor or less likely full time 4X4 in a real truck.

It would feel real funky like a brake binding if engaged on dry road turning on many. That style should NOT be left engaged unless really needed. I don't think this would have the type you have to get out and turn a knob at the front wheels which was common way back,
