1989 Honda Accord Grinding noise	Sign In

I had my cv joints replaced December 2006. Ever since I have this noise that has become worse. The car starts to make a grinding noise about 25 mph to 45 mph then quiets down at 55 mph +. The sound goes completely away when I put the clutch in or take the car out of gear. What is it? Help!! Thanks.

You should start with checking the trans. fluid. From your description of the noise it sounds like the throwout bearing is the culprit though. That entails replacing the clutch. Again, I am only basing this on your description of the noise.

Thanks, I took it to a transmission shop and did not tell them anything except it was making a strange noise. The Tech drove it and came back and said it was the right wheel bearing. I noticed today I thought it made the sound even after taking it out of gear. Do you think a bad wheel bearing can only make noise under a load? I have read all the postings on wheel bearings. I guess I should have it repaired. Can I have just the wheel bearing replaced or the whole Hub assembly? Thanks. Taun

Wheel bearings can make noise just under load, turning left, turning right, just when braking etc., so that can't be ruled out by just one noise it can make. They don't heal so it must go. Some are pricey and many are the hub with bearing in it only as replacements. If you trust the diagnosis don't wait and do get it done.

A total failure is unsafe and lots more expensive,
