2008
Mazda 6, i Sport
2.3L 4 cylinder
215k miles
Had the trans replaced at 60k miles right after I bought it due to factory defect. I've never missed an oil change. Recently (6 months ago) had the intake manifold and spark plugs replaced.

About 2 months ago, my CEL came on and so I took it into Autozone to have the code checked--it was the Cat. I ran a bottle of cat cleaner through it and kept driving, but CEL remained on. I did some research and found that it wasn't super critical so I started putting a little money aside each paycheck to have it replaced. Last week, I started hearing a clicking sound. It got faster with more RPM. It's not very noticeable when I first start the car, but quickly gets louder as the car heats up.

I thought maybe the honeycomb of the cat was starting to break apart, so I did a little research and felt like changing it out seemed easy enough to handle myself, so I bought a bolt on from Autozone and replaced it myself. When I got the old cat out, it wasn't making any noise when I shook it.. bad sign. I went ahead and replaced it and it didn't solve the issue. I checked fluids and noticed that transmission fluid was very low, not even up to the lower notch, so I put a quart in to get it back in between (slightly higher than middle) and that also didn't solve the issue. I definitely have a transmission fluid leak though.

SO, I took a video of the issue so you can hear it. I probably didn't need to explain everything above, but did so to eliminate some issues that people might suggest. Anyone have any idea what this might be? The clicking gets faster with RPMs and happens in every gear, including neutral. It gets noticeably louder AFTER I let off the gas when reving. I don't feel any issues in performance. Here's the vid:

I have a bad feeling about it =/

You're right, that doesn't sound good. Could be a rod knock but you need to have a professional listen to it in person.

I'll 2nd that "not good" unless somehow fooled by something loose external a double knock I'll call that is bad news.

Arg, could take a tear down to see if that's ruined anything or be fixed still is a big job you don't want to hear about,
Tom
