2017 Suzuki Vitara rattle
The car has done about 30k miles. The rattle can be described as: like dragging a tin can along the road only heard when moving, starting at low speeds getting worse over time disappears when turning left gets louder when turning right sounds like it's coming from underneath, rather than the engine not sure if its linked, but at the last MOT the chap advised that one of the brake callipers was sticking a bit. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Since it stops when you turn left the first thing I would look at is the backing plates behind the rotors. They start with very little clearance in the first place so if anybody pulls on them when working on the car they will easily make contact with the rotor. If you pull off the wheels you can look down behind the rotor to see if it's too close. If it is just push it away a little bit. Other than that you need to look at the tin heat shields on the exhaust manifold and the Catalytic Converter for any rusted loose. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

For heat sheilds: Just tap on exhaust pipes or parts (engine off) it will make a rattle. Fix if so re-spot weld it if all there or SS large hose clamps hold it in place firmly like wrap around it. Clamps that large are for clothes dryers in hardware stores if good quality they won't stick to a magnet! SS = stainless steel, Tom

Thanks for the suggestions, the backing plate certainly sounds like a good place to start. Its reassuring to know it doesn't sound like anything too serious/dangerous.

Yes - those are very real. I suggested another elusive noise, check all of it. Backing plates do, do that. If not understood you see it, bend those back are there to control water splashing on brakes not much more for disc brakes. Yikes, if the thing is plastic and doing this IDK try a heat gun carefully out of harm's way? It's involved a bit to replace most not necessary most of the time. Both our suggestions are common at least to me, Tom

Just to provide an update, I had the annual MOT test today at my local Council testing station and it was indeed the shield that sits behind the brake disc on one of the front wheels that was rubbing. He just pulled it back a bit whilst he was underneath doing his safety checks and all is good. Didn't even charge extra for the fix. Thanks again for the original responses.
