post locked   Car makes a thumping noise after I'm done accelerating...

I've tried to read some other posts.

2014 Kia Optima EX 2.4L 180K miles

Friday, I bought break pads which I'm going to put tomorrow. The breaks do grind as I get to a full stop. However, this noise is NOT the same noise.

I thought maybe there was something in my tire. I no longer think that.

Like I read in a couple of other topics, when I turn my car to the left, it's a little louder and sounds more like a clicking that thumping. When I'm straight on, it thumps, and the tone changes based on speed. The noise sounds like it's coming from the front left side, but there are times when it just sounds centered.

However, upon further review of driving it today, I noticed when I'm accelerating...no noise, especially 0 -> whatever my speed is for the road. Going from, say, 30 -> 50, the thumping will dissipate as I'm accelerating.

I'm putting new break pads on tomorrow, so if you all still think it's wheel/tire related I'll inspect it. (I'm going to anyway.)

Fix your brakes before you look for other problems.

I hope your planning on doing more than just slapping a set of brake pads on it.

I plan on going any cleaning necessary. I won't know if I need more work until I take it apart. The front side of the rotors look in good shape.

Don't bet on that. You already stated it was grinding and even if it wasn't the rotor surface is no longer flat and straight and likely severely glazed over which will cause all kinds of issues and ruin the new brake pads.

Rotors were good shape. Back brakes didn't need to be changed. Brakes are in great shape.

I still have thumping that doesn't happen while I'm accelerating.

No, your rotors were not good. Rotors wear, even without grinding. Some parts wear thinner than others and the surface is not perfectly flat any more. These high spots will thump on the brake pads and cause noises and thumping.

Rotors were good shape. The noise was coming from a very damaged front, passenger tire that reached a tipping point. The two rear tires were great shape (new tires last September). The incongruity led to extra wear on the driver's side, front.

Two new tires and an alignment fixed it right up. Glad I save money on the brake pad replacement.
