chirping sound at speed. Sign In

Heya guys, new to the forum, and I hope you can help me.

My 2001 Renault Clio (Y reg, 1998-2001 model) 1.2 has recently started to make a chirping noise, when I set off it sounds normal, and it seems to start making the noise between 40 and 60 MPH, most of the time if I press the clutch the noise will a few times I have pressed the clutch and it has carried on.

The sound seems to be intermittent, some times it's there and sometimes it isn't, if I short shift (to make the engine rev a bit lower) it doesn't change, if I rev close to the redline it doesn't change, as far as I am aware if it was a belt it would get louder as I revved the engine. When I am at idle, either in neutral or in gear with the clutch pressed it's normal, no chirping sound.

As I say it seems to be more traveling at speed, but it doesn't seem as bad over 60 (I don't know if wind or engine noise is just drowning it out.)

I can't tell where the sound is coming from though, just that it's a very definite sound, and it can be heard inside the car, with the windows up.

Also I hear no difference whilst steering, it doesn't get louder or quieter.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, and thanks for any assistance you could be.

If you tap on the brakes while the noise is happening, does it change or go away?

Don't understand what you mean here.

If you swerve the vehicle while cruising, does the noise change or go away?

Sorry, don't know where that came from, I should proof read, what it was meant to say was that if I press the clutch, 9 times out of 10, the noise will stop (everything sounds normal) but on occasion it will remain.

Also steering seems to do nothing, swerving, moving out to overtake there are no changes.

Speed of vehicle related not brakes, engine RPM or steering. ? OK - Try rotating tires and put any wheel trim if any on the different rim. If noise moves with wheel if you can tell check that. If it goes away either wheel trim or the wheel and tire had the issue causing it,

My car doesn't use trims (as in hub caps) they are all alloys with a center hubcap.

I took it out today and it seemed ok, I'll let it be for now and if it comes back I'll get it looked at.

One thing I haven't checked is the brake pads, but I'm waiting on a new wheel brace to remove the wheels (they wouldn't budge with the one that came with the car) but that's next to check.

Discretesignals (DS) asked if using brakes changed the chirp you said NO. You should know condition of brakes anyway and be checked.

As far as wheel trim some CAN maybe be the cause even if just center caps. If not essential for holding the wheel on (totally doubt that) take them off to see if any chance they are making noise. You've ruled out a lot already or think so. Time to try what can change it or make it go away or even worse?

Ok, I'll pull them off and go out tomorrow and report back. Depending on what happens I'll pop them back on one by one and see what happens as I'm not 100% where it is.
