2.4L or 2.7L? Any trouble codes in the PCM? Some codes won't turn the check engine light on FYI. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

2.4L....no codes.....no check engine light. Breaks down and drains battery. 3 different diagnostics indicate alternator. changed it out 4 times and still no charge over 12.2V

Unplug the 4 wire connector from the alternator. Check for battery voltage with your meter on the lug the battery cable connects to. When you turn the ignition to run with the engine off, does the charge light stay on? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

12.5V is the reading without the alternator wires attached. Should I plug the wires back in before I turn the ignition to run (with engine off) and am I checking for the battery light?

Unplug the connector from the alternator again. Check for battery power on the orange wire terminal. It should be hot all the time. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Should be battery voltage on that wire at all times. Check your ECM fuse 10 A in the fuse block under the hood. If the fuse looks good, with the fuse plugged in check for battery voltage at the fuse. Remove the fuse from the panel. Take your meter and find out which terminal has battery power on it where the fuse plugs in. The one that isn't hot leave your red lead of the meter on. Set your meter to ohms and take the black lead and probe the orange wire at the alternator connector. You should have continuity through the orange wire from the fuse box to the alternator connector. reading directly from fuze box to the orange wire is 000000 and the meter just flashes from 0.fl to 0.000

Touch your meter leads together with it set on ohms. what does it say. Is the battery good in the meter? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The battery in the meter not only powers the meter, but also is used to send a small amount of current through a wire or conductor when your doing an ohm test. If the battery in the meter is weak, it may give you weird readings when you check a wire that has some length. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

That looks like a good reading. Should be really close to 0 (whatever scale it is set on). Recheck that orange wire again with your ohm meter. While you are checking the orange wire look at where the orange wire goes into the connector at the alternator. Give a little tug on the wire while watching the wire near the plug. If the insulation stretches, the wire maybe broken inside the insulation. Sometimes the wires break up near the connector from getting pulled on while unplugging the connector. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Re: 03 hynundai soanta charging system failure

no give in the insulation with a slight tug. Rading from the hot side of the fuse box is 0.000 and it flashes to 0.fl. from the dead side of fuse box to orange wire the reading is 0.64 ohms. From ground off the alternator to the orange wire .15 ohms

I have a copy of this schematic. I ran the test exactly from the 10A fuse slot to the orange wire and got a 0.64 from dead side of fuse slot and a 0.000 from hot side.
