I replaced the distributor and that is when my problem began, a miss. I have replaced the distributor 3 times, ecu module, cap & rotor, spark plugs, plug wires and coil. I used a plug in the no3 wire laying on the front brace started the car and it was firing and as soon as I gave it gas the spark went away. I checked the fuel injectors and all ticking, compression is 140. Out of ideasUnsure

Check your firing order again

4-Cyl Firing Order: 1 3 4 2

stang; The spark plug must have a good ground. It is entirely possible that with the engine running and the plug just lying 'near' metal that it was losing the ground. What is the condition of the spark plug? Black and sooty, or clean and white? The injectors can 'click' but still be faulty.

I have the correct firing order I don't understand how at idle you get spark and as soon as you accelerate the spark goes away.

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

I changed all pieces one at a time to see if that would fix the problem. I put new plugs in, no change. I used an inline spark detector and layed a plug grounded to the chassis and had the same result. The plug quits firing approx 2-4000 rpm and comes back very weak after that.

Are you only losing spark on one specific cylinder or random cylinders?

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

Just the no 3 cylinder. I put an old plug wire back on same result, a different plug, I am total stumped on this. It sounds like a grounding problem but it does it with the plug grounded to the chassis as well.

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

There are limited possibilities to lose the spark on one cylinder. They would be the plug, the wires or the cap. There are no other possibilities if your right about it being spark causing the problem in the first place.

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

I know, that's what is so puzzling. You can visually see the spark go away on the plug when it is laying on the car and when you use the spark checker it stops firing also. I can't thing of any way to isolate which one it is. You would think it is the no3 post on the cap, I put the old cap & rotor back on and it didn't change.

Then you could be wrong about what's going on there but there are no other option for that failure.

How are parts from a 5.0 going to help a 4 cyl Topaz?

HT; This is really reaching out there, but what about the air gap between reluctor and pickup? Or reluctor damaged somehow?

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

It would have to be only one blade of the reluctor damaged because the rest of the cylinders are fine.

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

Got another used distributor and the same result. Took distributor out dropped in one post over moved wires to see if it was #3 cylinder or that one particular post on cap. It turns out to be post on cap which I believe means control mod which has been changed 3 times or the brain box I think. If this is not the right deduction please reply.

stang; Let me 'regroup' my thoughts. You are absolutely certain that you have no spark going to #3 spark plug?

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

Lots of good advise going on here & I don't want to clutter things up any more so I'll just say a couple of things that popped into mind. Too bad we can't see an ign pattern or comp waveform.

I wonder what swapping injectors would do for the original problem? I also wonder if the intake valve is opening? I also wonder why dist was replaced in the 1st place?

Sidom; Yeah, I know. It is weird. He is adamant that there is no spark to #3. I just can't think of anything else. Don't ever 'hesitate' with 'ideas'. That's what this forum is all about.Wink

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

Hello, Sorry I haven't updated lately this think is just exhausting me. I replaced due to original had bushing going out and was squealing. We'll bought a used dist. to see if it might have been auto store supplier and it is not. Just to eliminate if it is just #3 or that post on cap, I took dist. out moved it over 1 post and moved wires accordingly and it turns out it is the post on the cap. So I am out of ideas as to what the electrical route is that makes a particular post fire or not fire. It still has fire at idol to about 1500 and then it starts to breakup to nothing at about 2000-3500/4000 and then comes back weak but there. I put old coil back on and tried 2 different control mod. still no change. Does the electrical sequence go through the injectors? What does the firing plug on the wiring harness by the dist. for?
Thanks for all the help.

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

I don't know how many different ways we can say it....

If you tested it properly, it can only be the plug, wire or dist cap. No other possibilities. It may not be spark at all that your losing.

Hammer:Okay if it is not spark that I am not losing what logical thing should I be looking at. Their is a shorting plug (photo from all data) in that wire harness that I looked at, what is the function of this plug?

Re: 92 Topaz #3 not firing Sign In

That is a timing shunt.

You really should use an inline spark tester to find out for sure what is going on with the spark. It could be a dirty/bad fuel injector, valve problem or a vacuum leak

Here's what the spark tester looks like.
