I have a 2006 pt cruiser that started shaking really bad and the service engine light came on and also the dash light would not work. It has done this several other times the shaking but not the engine light. Car will finally start running alright. Do you know what this could be. The car only has 48000 miles.

Thank,
Kathy

Ok: I'd start with getting a code reading. Many parts stores like AutoZone are doing this as a courtesy and any info with that can only help,

Does it shake at speed? Or just shake all the time. This could be a quick fix with a wheel alignment.

Shaking, running bad, check engine light on--- usually equals a misfire.

Hi all,

My '05 did the same thing a few weeks ago when it really got cold (10 for a high). It snapped out of it when the enegine got warm. I put in premium gas and some STP injector cleaner. Everything is fine now. I'm staying away from the "cheap" gas at the corner discount places.

Come Spring I will check and maybe swap the plugs. An auto parts friend said they have had issues with the Boasch Platinum +4 foul in engines that don't run hot. Maybe regular Boasch plugs when it gets warm out.

Like Tom , I would start with the the engine trouble codes first, then go from there. Unsure

Hello,

I've been dealing with this exact same situation for months. No one seems to know what the problem is. Did you have the WONDERFUL experience of taking it to the dealership and having them tell you they can find nothing wrong? I've had to do a lot of internet searching. I've discovered that there is a known problem with the spark plugs and wires. New spark plugs have been called for with a new size. My car is going in tonight and the plugs are being done and new wires are being put in. If that doesn't do it the car is going and I won't buy a Chrysler again!

My mother (who has an '04) and I (mine is an '06) have both had this happen to us as soon as we would turn the ignition on. The car would shake like it was going to explode. We each had this happen to us twice. Each time, we would quickly shut the car off and wait and try again. It would take about 3-4 tries and then it would start as usual. The RPM's do not change and I have taken it in both times and they said nothing misfired. the second time it happened to me, I had had the fuel injectors cleaned and sparks plugs changed the week prior. The last time it happened was a year ago and I then changed to premium fuel and it hasn't happened again.....

On a sad note, my car has 48,000 km on it and it is already getting a new engine because the rad fan broke and the engine overheated while on the highway - warping a lifter in the process... that was 2 weeks ago and they told me there was nothing wrong when i took it in. I took it in 2 days ago because I am persistant and now I need a brand new engine. What I am wondering is, since the temp gauge never goes above 1/2, how will I ever know in the future if I am overheating? Seems shoddy to me. I am this close to trading it in for a Honda- if my car is treated the way I treat it (oil changes every 3000 km, etc..) what is going to happen once the warranty runs out????

I have an '06 Cruiser. Throughout the winter it was leaking oil over the passenger side front. The idiots at Jiffy Lube said there was no leak. I took it to my mechanic who set me up with the local dealer, because I have moved since buying the car.

After two weeks at the dealer (I finally had to strong arm them into paying for a rental after a week), they told me I needed a new engine. Thank God, the car was still under warranty.

The dealer told me that the crank shaft was pushing against the oil seal. It's a design flaw. He said other Cruisers have come in and needed new engines. Sounds like Chrysler is trying to keep this quiet so they don't have to do a recall.

If your Cruiser - especially an '06 - is leaking oil in the front take it in immediately.

Thanks for the heads up on that. They used to call that a "silent recall" but if you know it's your engine you are better off getting a whole new one than fix up the old. Hope you made out - stuff happens,

We are having the same issue with our 2006 PT. It is under warranty and the dealer has had it for 3 weeks now.
We noticed that it was leaking oil so we took it to the dealer and they told us that it was a "silent recall". The "thrasher or thresher" bolts were coming out and causing the oil to leak. They have had to replace the crankshaft. Also our instrument cluster went out just prior to that. I am not sure I feel safe driving this when I get it back. M

I have a 2006 PT Cruiser that I bought for my daughter. Its now starting to leak oil out of the front main seal. How original when the car is out of warraty the darn thing starts to act up. So much for American vehicles. I'm buying a Toyota or Nissan or what ever.

Hi Kathy,
I had the same shaking problem. I just got it fixed. It was the outside tie rod. Very inexpensive fix.

I had the same problem with my 06 cruiser. I left a trail of oil around the building and someone noticed it thank god. I had it towed in with 25000 miles on it and they rebuilt the bottom of the engine.

Hi, just thought you might be interested in what I just experienced today. I Love my '06 PT Cruiser The problem I had was when I turned on the A/C after 5 minutes at idle the Engine would shake and Compressor would cycle. I did notice that the Radiator Fan NEVER came on at any Time and my water temp would ALWAYS stay in the Middle Range. Well Changed the Fan Assy and my A/C works as Advertised. No damage to Engine. Very Weird.

I have a 2006 PT Cruiser. Two weeks ago I was sitting at a stop light and when I went to push the gas to go, the check engine light came on and the car started to sputter. When I had the code read, it said it was to O2 sensor. I had it replaced and it did the same thing after driving it 10 miles. I took it back and they replaced the sensor thinking it was defective. I am on my 3rd sensor and it continues to putt-putt when I push the gas. It happens more going up hill or flat when the car tries to switch gears.
Has anyone had this problem? It has 49k miles and it is out of warranty and $300.00 later, I don’t know what to do.

get the catalictic converter checked. my dealer changed the H2O sensor & the cat converter didn't show up on "their test". but i had another mechanic check it (before i took it to the dealer) & they said that it wan't cooling properly. so if something else goes wrong--right to the dealer i go!

I just came from the dealership regarding the oil leak on the passenger front end of my 2007 PT Cruiser. MAJOR OIL LEAK! It seems that Chyrsler has a problem with the crank shaft hitting the cam seals (thereby breaking them) and thereby compromising the engine. I have been dealing with this for the past two weeks... four times to the dealer which never checked the play in the crank shaft before today.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that they (chrysler) honor the warranty and either replace the engine or repair the engine. My family has only trusted Chrysler with its vehicle purchases. I hope and pray that they do the right thing here.

Shocked
