Rebuild engine or buy crate Sign In

Hey there, I don’t consider myself a mechanic but I’m deff not a begginer I’ve learned a lot from a close friend over the past 12 years and I’m just looking for a second opinion I have a 08 Chevy cobalt 5 speed manual 2.2l that I’m completely reworking from the ground up this is my first ever project car so I’m wondering which is my best option to shave down and bore out the head or just buy a bigger crate engine for more power I already plan to supercharge the engine either way I go I’ve already got started on rebuilding my transmission any advice is more than welcome.

Re: Rebuild engine or buy crate Sign In

? Basically this 2008 vehicle is a computer just placed on 4 wheels (typo was there) but marked a 2008. First you can do anything if unlimited means and time so exceptions but so rare most should learn first:
You'll end up with some wonderful engine that doesn't match anything to accommodate all sensors so it can run at all by machine work could be flawless. It's computer controlled to do that it matches like DNA with the vehicle you can't just change it those designs took BILLIONS to make a legal vehicle.
If you really want some road burning machine look back at least 40 years and get a great rust free frame of something you want as the frame (chassis or unit-body) is the model year not the rest.
I'm not into it but most who are choose very old now if that what you had in mind? I mean 60s and lots older just for the model year.
You should also know rebuilt and machining certain things - cylinders, crankshafts you aren't even close to an OE new engine so it just wont last you've lost the balance and precision of new. OMG, even new parts machined only a few at a time and change machine bits still the parts aren't interchangeable! Might run but will tear itself up with use some do new by mistake.
In short - really re-think what you want. If you want all kinds of other performance features than you have go get the whole vehicle made that way and take incredible care of it you'd be mega thousand$ ahead and can keep fixing things,

Sorry to be blunt but this is just an impossible pipe dream. This is a computer controlled FWD 4 cyl car. Unless you have a half dozen engineering degrees and an unlimited budget, this is never going to happen.

Well that's a heck of a project.

You know, I use to love to work on cars and projects like that one you are doing...years ago... Then I started doing it professionally and now 35 years later I can even stand to do my own brks.....lol

I don't really get into high perf anymore. On top of what you trying to do will will need to power tune your PCM to get all this to work. You will probably need to go to place like rpm-motorsports, carid or there might even be something at summit racing for this. You'll just have give them all the specs as far as cam, comp, turbo, super, etc so they can dial up a tuned PCM for you. A lot of this is trial and error, you may need to do this two or 3 times before you getting it dialed into a power band you are happy with...

Fixed an error on my 1st reply should have said what it reads now. This is a computer on 4 wheels, now corrected. The guys agree - this isn't something even a car company would take on without knowing it was for 1,000s of vehicles or just a wild waste of time and bucks. Yup, that bad,

Tom
