How do I slacken the belt tensioner on my 2003 ford Taurus in order to replace the serpentine belt?

That may not be the exact tensioner but gives the idea. There should be something square to put a 1/2 drive flex handle in or some you can grab with like adjustable wrench on a square part if like this one at all.

There's a set of tools that make this easy but almost all can be faked with assorted tools common to most collections. If you end up prying just watch what you pry against so you don't damage it. Also - when belt is off of the tensioner the tool used will want to go further than it did when you started so watch that it doesn't hit anything and that you can still catch it to replace belt with new or the old one - whatever you are doing that needs the belt off,

May look like this too. That appears like a 3/8th drive flex, ratchet or whatever would go in the square hole in back....

It is under spring tension. There should be either a bolt head for a wrench or socket to fit on, or a square that a ratchet (1/2") will fit in. Pay close attention, or draw a diagram, of the belt routing before removal. Usually, there is a decal under the hood with a diagram.
