2007 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3 flex 138,000 miles I have a 2007 chevy tahoe 5.3 flex with 138,000 and below is the freeze frame data from my scanner that threw a P0430. Not sure if it is a bad cat or something else. CEL only comes on at idle. Does not run rough. I have already replaced all of the o2 sensors and cleaned the fuel injectors and installed a new air filter and cleaned the throttle body installed new spark plugs and wires. I can clear the code and usually comes back after a day or 2 always at a stop or idle. It does not seem to have any exhaust leaks or intake leaks but haven't checked real in depth for that yet. I was hoping someone could make sense of the freeze frame data to know for sure if it is a bad cat or not. There are basically only 2 things that can trigger that code 1) And air leak just in front of the rear 0/2 sensor that contaminates the sensor reading 2) A bad converter There are a very specific set of circumstances that have to take place over a period of time for that code to set. Basically, the rear 0/2 has to mirror what the front 0/2 is doing and that can't happen simply by coincidence. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks, I'll check a little closer for a leak. When I checked the live data for bank 2 sensor 1 it would fluctuate up and down and the bank 2 sensor 2 stayed steady. So I feel that the cat is doing its job. I also checked the temp before and after and it was 150 degrees hotter after the cat. Thanks again.

Apparently the readings are not always doing that because mirroring is what it takes to set the code.

One frame of engine data is useless in diagnosing cat issues. Besides the fuel system was in open loop at that frame count. How is the engine running? Burning oil or coolant? Any misfire or drive-ability issues? Look at the freeze frame data for the P0430 code and try to the mimic the conditions while watching the front and rear o2 sensor switching counts. Sometimes a cat may work good at low exhaust flow condition and fall on its face at higher exhaust flow situations. If you could access mode$06 information and look at test results, you can see what part of the tests it failed to help in diagnoses. As HT stated exhaust leaks around the O2 sensors or sluggish front sensor can make the engine controller think there is an issue with the cat. 99% of the time it is a faulty catalyst. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The tahoe runs fine. No misfires or drive-ability issues. I have had this tahoe for about 5 months and I've been doing basic tune-up stuff to rule that out before replacing the catalyst. After changing the oil it did burn a quart at about the 2500 mile mark, and since then I have done the TSB #10-06-01-008M in which I updated the drivers side valve cover with the updated pcv location and performed the piston soak with the GM cleaner and installed the AFM valve deflector in the oil pan hoping this would help with the oil consumption and I also installed a oil catch can between the pcv valve and the intake. Like I mentioned before in my original post the only time the CEL comes on is at idle. About a month after I got the tahoe I went on a long trip about 500 miles in one day and had cleared the codes before I left and the CEL did not come on the whole time driving down the interstate and it came on later after driving in town at a stop light. Just trying to figure out why it only comes on at a stop. Thanks.

When the light comes on doesn't matter. Like I said, it takes a whole sequence of events to set that code. All of those things you recently did could have contributed to damaging the Catalyst, especially the upper cleaning. All that crap went right into the Cat ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The light has been coming on for 4 months so the cats are probably already bad unless there is a small leak, but from what you are saying probably 99% bad cat. I guess I'm glad I did the upper cleaning with the old cats than running through new ones. I'll double check for leaks when I get home and if none are found I will be ordering a new catalytic converter, I was just hoping it was something else. Thanks again.

Just curious > What's this set up with a "catch can" between PCV and intake? For what? If that dripped oil you've got other problems even if oil in that hose it shouldn't drip unless you put a hole in it or hose isn't any good. If pcv can't overcome normal blow-by engine might just be worn. BTW: Hard to say if 1 qt. in 2,500 miles is worth worrying about unless clearly leaking or again if PCV can't handle it find out why, T

You should be aware that code is for the bank 2 Cat only. I don't know if they can be serviced separately. Tom, I suspect the cover was redesigned to prevent liquid oil from splashing directly into the PCV.

Below is a link on ebay for the catch can set up. Link deleted ........... not allowed I just feel that if I can prevent oil from entering the intake it would run cleaner.

Links are not allowed here. I see, it's an oil separator. I thought you were doing some kind of TSB mod.

! I see the idea but shocked GM let this flaw go for years if that's all it is. It's just a side note that if this thing works just what is it or you supposed to do when it's full of oil or when full just chokes on oil if really caught and burning it. It's ok I guess but would figure the upgraded valve cover and placement would do it - others don't suck up oil rather valve covers if that's where PCV is would do that. Just disappointed in a flaw like that, Tom

It wasn't an upgrade valve cover as I assumed. It was an aftermarket oil separator.

The catch can I installed has an clear tube for an oil level indicator and a drain valve. So I just have to keep an eye on it.

Let it go. I'd have to see why anyone would do that and suspect it just hides the issue not cure anything - where does that oil go when full? That I wouldn't like - that's all and thing it's probably a thing not needed at all? Can't say never had a problem like that, that wasn't a worn engine or sludged up, Tom
