2010 Toyota Auris 1.4 D-4D (220k km): non-operational Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The car was driven for weeks with "engine oil maintenance" check-light on. Eventually it shut down while driving; presumably a fail-safe engaged. After the engine oil was topped up, the power steering assistance isn't working anymore, and the EPS check-light is on. An unlikely coincidence or is there an explanation, relating 1. low engine oil (and consequent shutdown) to 2. non-operational EPS? The only explanation I can think of: the fail-safe, which prevented the engine's self-destruction due to lack of oil, also 'took down' EPS's ECU. Thanks for any response.

You have a bunch of incorrect assumptions here. There is no such thing as a low oil shutdown. That would be an extreme safety hazard. The engine would continue to run until it seized up. I don't think there is any relationship at all between the steering problem and the oil level. What you need to do is get this into a competent shop and have it diagnosed correctly. Thanks for the response. You were correct: no relation between low-oil and the observed symptoms. Turned out the alternator died. And indeed, there's no failsafe for low-oil scenario.
