Ripped off for service on a '96 Honda civic?

Hey folks i don't know if this is the right spot to post this question but here goes. I have a '96 Hona Civic with manual trasmission. I took it into the shop to get a check out and they found some things that will eventually need fixing. I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on whether the prices they quoted were reasonable. First they suggested i replace the timing belt at some point since my mileage is past the due point for my car. They want $979.02 for parts and service. This is the one that seems kinda high to me. Second i have a crack in my exhaust manifold that they said shouldn't cause any immediate problems. For this they quoted $1,1012.40. Something like $800 of that was for the part. Seems like i could save lots of money if i could procure the part myself somehow for cheaper. Any advice? Thanks tons Chris

Chris If you are in doubt, I suggest getting a second opinion not so much on whether the work is required but in the costs of the repairs. When you’re getting the other estimate make sure they are quoting you the same repair. I can see a timing belt repair/replacement get that high in cost, if they are changing everything that, either tensions, guides or is driven by or for the belt. Along with new oil seals, the remaining accessory drive belts and fluids. I will also suggest not waiting too much longer with having the timing belt replaced, if it fails you will be into a very costly repair bill. Replacing everything seems a bit over the top but maybe they’ve had a bad experience with a belt failing after they did a replacement and now do change everything in there, which may or may not be necessary. As for the exhaust manifold you could likely find a used one for someone to install, (at quite a saving), as long as you’re willing to take the responsibility of any extra costs if the used part fails and needs to be done a second time. Way too expensive! Timing belt is needed at 60-70K but whole job should be under $300. Depends on your location and could be a lot less than that. The manifold could be an expensive part (never been there on that car) but I would call and find out what it's worth new and check on a good used one. I don't think they are common. - T
