I met with a guy to look at a 2004 Mercury Monterey Van. When checking it out and test driving it here is what happened. When I hit the gas it would make a low boomf rumble sound that you could feel as well. Sounded exactly like someone was driving by with a sound system and a subwoofer. If I had it parked and pressed on the gas it would make the sound. Then if I let off of the gas as it re approached idle it would make the sound. When driving, it would make it as well and when accelerating it would do it for what seemed a longer period of time. What was causing it? The exhaust? Iwas trying to figure out what the problem was. Thanks for any input.

Yes, an exhaust leak would fit your description but there is no way for us to accurately diagnose a sound over the Internet. You need someone knowledgeable to listen to it in person. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Ok thank you. Another thing worth mentioning is that the sound was not consistent or constant. For example as I hit the gas while parked as the rpms went up it may make the noise once or twice, boomf, boomf. Then nothing. Then as I let off as it approaches idle and the engine got quieter it would happen again. Boomf. Does that still fit with an exhaust leak? Thank you

An exhaust leak will be louder when the engine is under load (acceleration) and less when not driving.

Will it be intermittent like that? Or will it be a constant rythmic noise?

It will do whatever the engine is doing. It's also not the only possibility as things like the air pump can also make noises like that. Like I said in the first place, this isn't something you can resolve over the Internet. Someone has to listen to it in person.
