My daughter just purchased a 2013 Honda CRV w/FWD, front tires are worn to the point of needing replacement, rear have almost all (80%ish) tread remaining.Appears previous owner did not rotate his tires.
Some people would say conventional wisdom would be to replace all 4.
I'm thinking because the rear tires have so much tread remaining it would be okay to purchase only 2 new (exact same tire to match the existing rear)
and have the existing rear tires moved to the front and have new tires mounted on the rear.
Is my thinking correct or should she go with conventional wisdom and replace all four?

As long as you are purchasing the exact same size tire it's fine to replace 2 at a time.
If it was an all wheel drive that may be a different story but with a FWD, it's fine.
It's important that they are all the same size for ABS reasons.

If they weren't rotated, chances are they weren't balanced either so even if there's lots of tread left the wear isn't even. I'd say replace all 4 if you can.

New rule/law, some states. No working on tires over 5 years old engraved in sidewall! IDK if that will remain long?? Would and did (on me) spare was over 5 , was 6 (rim leak) illegal to fix it! Note, several new cars come without spares - nice!

Hi Tom and all long time members! I'm back (if allowed wouldn't want to aggravate anyone)
I agree 100% with Tom that tread depth is not the only consideration when determining tire condition.
It's your family riding/driving this vehicle. Please don't let your wallet determine their safety.
