fuel gauge not working

I have an 89 ford f150 custom with a 5lt engine. Was having problem with fuel gauge not reading correctly, would be reading 3/4 full then act as if out of fuel knowing that i had at least that amount of fuel in tank and was told i needed to replace the sending unit. So I did that and now the gauge reads 7/8 full with no power on and shoots well above the full mark when the power is on. Now keep in mind I only have 5 gallons of fuel in tank at present for testing sending unit and gauge but gauge wants to read 7/8 full. Checked power at sending unit connector have power at the low press pump but no power going to the sender itself. Traced the fuel gauge wire back to gauge there seems to be no power at wire source. Got any answers for me.

Is this a dual tank truck? If so, does it behave if you switch to the other tank? If you unplug the connector to the sending unit what does the gauge do?

No this is a single tank and if i unplug connector there is no change in the fuel gauge.
