Hi all, Any help appreciated but I realise its not easy to answer this sort of thing :-) The noise : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIdVD1dmmwU&feature=youtu.be I've got a 2007 Ford Focus. Just driving along the road and suddenly have a strange winning (sp?) noise coming from the engine. It's more high pitched than low and seems to be coming from the engine area where the belts are. Can't see anything obvious and belts look good. Thanks

Not showing for me (my fault probably) but sudden noises by your description could be power steering fluid loss so check that. Then if nothing wrong seen take the belt off or just spray it with water and see if noise changes, goes away or gets worse trying that. If you get belt off or at least out of the way with engine off spin the accessories and see/feel for a bad one. Just quick test. Find it as it's a warning of course, T

It sounds like there is a bearing bad in one of the belt driven components. It could even be one of the timing belt pulleys inside the cover. There are techniques to try to isolate the noise like listening through a long screwdriver or stethoscope but you have to be careful with a running engine and moving belt. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the help guys, Tom, you are right - its a leak in the power steering pipe - apparently a common fault with the Focus. Thanks again

Wild guess! Don't run it like that! Tow or whatever till fixed or blow pump + put debris thru system. Did finally watch your vid and thought it would be a belt driven something, T
