Run Grand Am GT 3.1 without thermostat, just for a bit?

Hello all, I have a leaking water pump because of backed up pressure. It just blew out and sprayed coolant all over. I suspect I need to replace the thermostat, may not be opening correctly. Obviously the pump too. My question is... Can I to try to remove the thermostat then run the engine from a cold start without it to relieve the pressure? I just need to drive it home like that, one time, about 4 miles. Then I can fix it properly. Thanks, Shawn

No, you cannot. That engine needs to run at a specific temp for the computer to work properly. It will also blow a head gasket or crack a head in a heartbeat if you get it too hot so the smartest thing you can do is repair that water pump ASAP. It also needs to remain under pressure to prevent boiling. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The price of a 4 mile tow is a fraction of what you will spend for repairs if you attempt to drive it. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

On that model it's actually easier to change the water pump than the T stat........ On this one, the lazy way would be fixing it right....

Doesn't matter now but where the heck would you get "backed up pressure?" The water pump just up and decided to fail and as Sidom just said it's a real easy one. Pressure is limited to the rating of the pressure cap not the water pump. You can replace that pump on location with minimal tools and I'd bet thermostat is fine but replace that later if still suspect. Watch temp like a hawk, don't allow an overheat. Even the tow as said will look cheap compared to the overheat, T
